Ever feel like flowers don’t quite hit the same anymore?

You’re not imagining it.

Most flowers people experience today are grown with durability in mind. Long stems, longer vase life, and the ability to hold up through shipping and handling across the country.

But that comes with tradeoffs.

Fragrance softens. Movement disappears. Blooms become more controlled and predictable.

The qualities that make flowers feel alive are often the ones that don’t survive long timelines.

Here in the Mid-Atlantic, when flowers are grown and used within the same region, they don’t have to be built for that system.

They can keep their movement. Their variation. Their presence.

For weddings, that difference is hard to explain but easy to feel.

It’s not just how the flowers look.

It’s how the entire space comes alive because of them.

Once you notice it, you can’t unsee it.

March sits right on the edge.

Outside, everything is still quiet,
but you can feel it.
Life is just starting to push through.
Not fully here, but close.

That almost-there moment.

Inside, we’ve been telling a different version of the season all winter long.

Pretty much any bulb crop can be forced indoors,
which means we can grow and design with spring
even while everything outside is just beginning.

This piece represents the end of that indoor winter season.

The tail end of months of forcing
where color, shape, and movement have been possible
long before the landscape catches up.

Because while March is just starting to open outdoors,
inside we’ve already been working with what spring is about to become.

That tension is the point.

Not recreating what’s happening outside,
but working just ahead of it.
Right where things begin to shift.

And honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of what we do.
100% locally grown, but always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

the way she captures this? The color, the energy, all of it.
Just so good.

Today, flowers move around the world following different growing seasons. When it is winter in the United States, it is summer in parts of South America. Flowers can be harvested there, placed into refrigerated cargo flights, and arrive here days later.

Over time, that reshaped expectations. Many people now assume any flower should be available at any time of year.

But that availability exists because of a global supply chain.

Local flower farms operate differently.

Flowers appear when the landscape says it is their moment. Each season brings its own textures, colors, and varieties that cannot be replicated at other times of year.

For weddings, that seasonality becomes something much deeper than a design choice.

It creates a sense of time and place.

The flowers don’t just look beautiful.
They make the day feel rooted in when and where it happened.

Last weekend at @artinbloom.dc, I had the honor of interpreting the Diana tapestry at Larz Anderson House through my piece, Before She Stood Still.

This work imagines the landscape before the moment depicted in the tapestry was fixed in woven form. Before stillness, before allegory settles in, there is movement. Early spring growth just beginning to emerge, not yet lush and not yet resolved, built from locally grown materials that reflect this exact moment in the season.

The florals live low, grounded in the same plane as the figures, allowing the tapestry to remain dominant while reintroducing breath and time back into the scene. Nothing reaches to meet her. Instead, the work exists beneath. The forest floor, the understory, the quiet before the narrative takes hold.

Built entirely in water and without foam, the structure relies on layering and repetition rather than height. Swaths of tulips, muscari, and early branches create a sense that the piece could continue growing beyond its edges. Something living, not placed.

Who’s ready for 2026 wedding season?

Because I’m going to be honest… I’m not. Not yet.

And I know that’s probably not what I’m supposed to say.

Of course I’m excited about our 2026 couples. Truly. We have some incredible things ahead and I wouldn’t trade this work for anything.

But right now… I still feel like I’m coming out of hibernation.

Or maybe like I didn’t get quite enough of it.

There’s this moment every year where everything starts to stack at once. The gardens wake up. Planting begins. Harvesting isn’t far behind. Designs start to layer in. The calendar fills fast.

And you can see it coming before it even fully hits.

It’s exciting. But it’s also a lot.

Especially when the weather can’t make up its mind. One week it’s 80 degrees and you start to believe spring is here… and the next it’s 30 again and you’re back in a coat wondering what season we’re even in.

So no… I’m not quite ready yet.

But I know in a few short weeks I will be.

The light will shift, the gardens will take off, and everything will start to feel like it’s moving forward again instead of waiting.

And when it does, we’ll be right in it.
