An Elven Wedding at Season’s End
Late season weddings in Northern Virginia are always a gamble. Early November can mean bare stems and frostbitten fields. This one pushed the edge of what’s possible, and somehow the season held.
We hadn’t had a killing frost yet. Which meant there were still a handful of dahlias left in the field. Not many. But enough for the pieces that mattered most, like the bridal bouquet.
When the bride first told me she wanted a “Bilbo Baggins birthday party,” I smiled. But as I got to know them, it became clear we weren’t creating a hobbit feast. We were building something quieter and more rooted. An elven-inspired wedding. Full of beauty. Full of groundedness. Romantic, but not theatrical. Intentional. Warm. Seasonally honest.

Because we were this late in the season, we leaned into what November does best.
Antiqued hydrangeas in dusty rose and muted plum. Loads of chrysanthemums in rich burgundy and copper. Dried celosia and textural dried elements tucked throughout. Berries. Swaths of greenery tinged in rust and deep wine tones. Creams and soft whites woven in to keep everything lifted.
The palette wasn’t trendy. It was seasonal. Warm burgundies and pinks layered with gold, rust, and whatever the greenery decided to give us that week. Nothing forced. Nothing imported to fake a season that had already passed.
The ceremony florals felt abundant but grounded. Like something that could have grown there.
By the time guests moved into the reception, the mood shifted from ethereal woodland to warm celebration.
Under glowing light and layered linens, the florals deepened. Textures mattered more than color matching. Antique hydrangea heads catching candlelight. Chrysanthemums holding their shape through the night. Dried elements adding movement and softness without demanding attention.
It wasn’t a literal interpretation of Lord of the Rings. It was a feeling. An atmosphere. Beauty that felt ancient and seasonal instead of staged.
Late fall weddings in Northern Virginia require flexibility and trust. The field looks different in November. The choices are different. But when couples lean into the season instead of fighting it, something richer happens.
This one felt like the closing chapter of 2025. Abundant. Romantic. Slightly wild. And completely rooted in what the land was willing to give.
