For those who’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about how tulips are more like annuals in our area than the perennials we wish they could be. Our growing conditions just don’t match what tulips crave, especially the big doubles and parrots. But! There’s a special group of tulips that actually do come back year after year—and even multiply! Through my own experience, I’ve found these tulips not only return but spread, as long as they’re planted deep and given good watering. If you’re after a true perennial tulip garden, this collection is for you. It includes the dependable Clearwater, Dordogne, Salmon van Eijk, and Double Maureen, proven to thrive and come back strong in our zone.
 
 
Important Information Regarding This Year’s Bulb Harvest
 
You might not know it, but the last few years have been tough for tulip growers, especially in Holland. Last fall, a combination of wet weather during planting and a cold, stormy spring led to significant crop loss. This has caused a ripple effect, leading to bulb shortages across the U.S., affecting everyone from large retailers to local garden centers. It’s actually reported to be the worst bulb harvest in 50 years!
 
At The Fertile Burb, I’m all about quality and transparency, so I wanted to give you a heads-up on how this might affect your orders. I’ve been in close contact with my trusted bulb suppliers, who have been candid about the challenges they’re facing. To ensure I can fulfill all orders, I’ve taken a conservative approach to pre-sale quantities to minimize the risk of cancellations.
 
That said, if a particular variety doesn’t make it to me, I’ll be substituting it with a similar type and color variety. I’ll keep you informed via email about any substitutions made to your mix, so there are no surprises.
